What is the 2.5mg dose for?

2.5mg is the standard starting dose of Mounjaro (tirzepatide). It’s used for the first 4 weeks to:

  • Help your body adjust to the medication
  • Minimise risk of nausea and other side effects
  • Prepare you for dose increases (to 5mg and above)
tip

Be patient! You’re unlikely to see major weight loss at this stage – and that’s okay. The 2.5mg dose is about building tolerance, not racing toward results.

Stepping down to 2.5mg

While 2.5mg is most commonly used as a starting dose, there are situations where a clinician may recommend stepping back down to this lower dose temporarily.

Side effects at higher doses

If you’ve moved up to 5mg or beyond and are experiencing strong nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or other side effects that don’t settle, returning to 2.5mg for a short time may help your body reset. Once you feel better, you and your clinician can discuss trying a slower titration.

Tapering off Mounjaro

If you’ve reached your goal weight and are looking to reduce or stop treatment, 2.5mg may be used as a transition dose. This helps minimise appetite rebound while your body readjusts to producing hunger hormones naturally. This should always be done under clinical supervision.
